A more expensive model isn’t always better
The right calculator is the one your course teaches you to use and your assessment permits. Start with your subject’s equipment instructions and the exact model number, including any suffix or edition.
A scientific calculator covers functions such as trigonometry, powers and statistics. A graphics calculator adds capabilities that may be useful in one subject but restricted in another. Your teacher’s preferred model can make classroom demonstrations easier to follow.
Queensland: check the subject and the paper
QCAA publishes separate scientific and graphics calculator rules. Its August 2026 scientific list includes models such as the Casio fx-82AU PLUS II, fx-8200 AU and TI-30XB MultiView. Being on that list does not make a calculator suitable for every paper.
The 2026 equipment list distinguishes between technology-free and technology-active papers. Mathematical Methods Paper 1 permits no calculator; Paper 2 lists approved graphics calculators without CAS functionality and approved scientific calculators. Read the entry for your actual subject and paper.
For graphics models, the settings matter as well as the name on the case. QCAA requires restricted features to be inaccessible during an exam and provides clearing or test-mode instructions. Ordinary classroom settings may not be exam-ready.
University rules can be different
School approval does not carry over automatically to university. At UQ, the exam timetable specifies whether an exam allows only the Casio FX-82 series, that series or other approved calculators, or no calculator.
UQ explicitly distinguishes the FX-8200 AU from the FX-82 series. The FX-8200 AU needs an approval sticker for in-person exams where that approved model is permitted. UQ has a separate label exception for online invigilated exams. Check the current instructions for your exam format.
